A chapter from “An Artist’s Story,” the life story Lee wrote in his eighties. In his words, as he wrote them.
Whenever I was about to arrive home a strange thought always seemed to come to mind. Sometimes this happens at the “big arrivals home“, like getting home to Lois and the kids at the end of my army service. After a long trip by train during the Second World War. Other times this thought would come just during my arrival home from work. Even at the end of a short trip by car or walking home as a young lad.
Now that I am going on to my eighty fourth year this “homecoming thought” seems to come more often. I have this homecoming feeling just before I get home when I am just about to “arrive“. It’s the feeling that I will be home soon. I know that I am closer to home today than ever before. It’s like each movement in a step taken. Each breath is a page turned. Each day is a mile marked. I am closer to home now than I have ever been.
And before I know it my appointed arrival time will come. I’ll step through and see faces that are waiting for me. I’m sure that I will hear my name spoken by those who love me. I am looking forward to a great “homecoming” How about you? “Hallelujah“.
My birthdays now are much on my mind too as I move through the 80’s. I know that the end of my earthly journey is not far off. Death does not appear to me as a great enemy. It has something of a pleasant aspect.
I always feel that the best part of the day is when I lie down for a nights rest. I don’t think death is a long sleep, I am sure that it is Much more than that. It offers some exciting possibilities.
I am not eager to leave this good life, but I don’t dread it. I trust GOD for a sweet rest and look forward for HIS high adventure. How great it will be to see loved ones especially “Christ” face to face.
This is my attitude toward that new life called death.
